I belong to a church of assigned goals, so I’ve decided to set some goals for other people to honor the end of 2016 and prepare us all for 2017:

  1. Read at least one book recommended by someone you disagree with.
  2. Try sushi. It really does deserve one more chance.
  3. Vocally oppose (Facebook doesn’t count) at least one terrible thing our president does or tries to do per month.
  4. Try to understand a scripture from someone else’s point of view.
  5. Take public transportation for one week straight.
  6. Fact check before you post.
  7. Don’t use the words “Donald Trump” unless absolutely unavoidably necessary.
  8. Take a moment every day to not be so hard on yourself.
  9. Go on at least one hike, scenic drive, or walk each month.
  10. Think of something better to ask newlyweds than “how’s married life?”
  11. Play a board game with someone you met this year.
  12. Spend your time like you spend your money. Or visa versa.
  13. Thank someone who never gets thanked.
  14. Learn the names of your city counselor and mayor. Vote in your municipal elections.
  15. Learn one new joke. A good one.
  16. Stand up to bullies. Even if they run the @POTUS Twitter account.
  17. Don’t fall in love with your own ideas, because then you will hate the world.
